BAE systems is engaged in the development, delivery and support of advanced defence and aerospace systems. This includes the design, manufacture and support of military aircraft, surface ships, submarines, radar, avionics, communications, and guided weapons systems.
BAE Systems has held a contract with NES for many years running Advanced Apprenticeships in Engineering and at any one time has several hundred learners on the programme.
One of the first organisations to make the Skills Pledge, BAE Systems has recently completed a ‘Pledge diagnosis’ and is working towards fulfilling their Pledge commitment of ensuring that all staff have the chance to study for a level 2 qualification.
For the past two years BAE Systems apprentices have won the title of ‘Advanced Apprentice of the Year’ in the NES awards. Rachael Hoyle acheived the accolade in 2008 and James Southwell won the Advanced Apprentice Award in the 2009 Workforce Development Awards.

Training is vital to surviving the recession according to many of the UK’s largest employers who attended the inaugural Workforce Development Awards in London last night (Thursday, 23 April). The event was hosted by the National Employer Service (NES) and winners include Tesco Stores Ltd., Vodafone, McDonald’s Restaurants, Rentokil Initial and Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd.
