JD Wetherspoon was founded in December 1979 when Tim Martin opened his first pub in Muswell Hill, North London. The pub was named after one of his former university lecturers. The company now employs 20,500 people and owns 738 pubs across the UK, with Tim Martin still at the helm as Chairman.
The company has long valued workforce development, with extensive training and in-house assessment schemes playing a key role in maintaining high standards. The company also runs a diploma and degree programme for Pub Managers and has won several awards for their training programmes.

The company has recently begun working with NES to deliver Hospitality and Catering Apprenticeships as well as Skills for Life programmes.
