McDonald’s was founded in the US in 1955 and currently has 26,500 sites worldwide.Launched in the UK in 1974, McDonald’s has 1200 restaurants and employs 72,000 people across the country. The UK restaurant volume is 50% owned by the company and 50% franchised with very strong strategic links attached to its franchise agreements. The company is the largest employer of under-21-year-olds in the UK and appoints on personality rather than qualifications. Tribal support the delivery of Skills for Life programmes within the restauranty chain.
In 2008 McDonald’s achieved awarding body status for the delivery of their shift manager programme, a level 3 qualification. A year later, in January 2009, McDonald’s became the largest private sector employer to offer apprenticeships, offering all crew members the opportunity to complete an in-house hospitality apprenticeship programme. Up to 10,000 employees are expected to benefit from this programme.
