National Grid has recently invested in two new leading edge, accredited training centres to meet the demand for new skills, augmenting the delivery of specialist training and CPD programmes through the existing training academy at Eakring near Nottingham. Through internal facilities and National Grid’s strategic training partners, delivery is in the order of 70,000 training days per annum, across a range of vocational, academic and development interventions. A significant focus is given to developing new talent, on the company’s accredited Graduate Development Programme, its Foundation Degrees and its Advanced Modern Apprenticeships, which are rated Grade 1 by OFSTED and have been awarded Beacon status. National Grid has had a contract with NES since around 2003 to support this training provision.
Skills with new technologies are essential, especially in the emerging industries, and employers can help to teach them – with established apprenticeships like those offered by BT and National Grid playing a crucial role.
