Employers encouraged to make the most of graduate talent

Posted on 18 May 2009

NES is offering its support to a new government initiative and asking employers to offer a graduate an internship opportunity.

Graduate Talent Pool is a new initiative to help employers create and offer graduate internships and offers a one-stop website giving advice, guidance and a matching service for employers and graduates, to help employers attract new talent to deliver on future business objectives.

The aim is to support around 5,000 new graduate internships across the private, public and voluntary sectors. The internships will help graduates to build on the skills gained through their degree course, whilst gaining valuable work experience. They will also be able to learn about a potential career path and prove themselves to prospective employers. In turn, the scheme will help employers to attract new talent to deliver on future business objectives.

The Graduate Talent Pool website matches employers with suitable graduates. Businesses that have already signed up to the Talent Pool include Network Rail, the Police Service, Marks and Spencer and Microsoft.

The Graduate Talent Pool website offers more information and enables organisations to register their interest in taking part. Once registered online, organisations will be contacted to identify requirements and to have appropriate candidates matched to internship vacancies. The programme is designed to be as flexible as possible in terms of the length of internship, hours worked and remuneration options. This is to ensure that the scheme brings maximum benefit to businesses.

NES employers are encouraged to register and also to provide their NES Account Manager with any feedback – good or bad – on the service they receive. This is to ensure that if any improvements to the service are needed they can be made as soon as possible.

Secretary of State John Denham said: “I urge those employers who want to benefit from the skills graduates can bring to register their interest and sign-up to the Talent Pool online. The Talent Pool will sit alongside the thousands of other opportunities available to new graduates that will help them improve their chances to get a long term and well paid career.”

I urge those employers who want to benefit from the skills graduates can bring to register their interest and sign-up to the Talent Pool online.

John Denham
Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills.
